Introduction

Like many others on this planet, I have fallen victim to the baffling existence of Tom Cruise. It's a disease that has gripped me for too long now; day and night, I'm left wondering who is Tom Cruise, why is Tom Cruise, and how is Tom Cruise.

This blog exists in tribute to this unshakable insanity. My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to rewatch every movie Tom Cruise has starred in before Top Gun: Maverick is released in June of 2020. Within my posts, I will note the date of rewatch, my general thoughts, and perhaps some commentary on how these films exist within the context of Cruise's life.

Feel free to delight in my unhinged fascination with Tom Cruise, or to laugh at it, or anything else that might tickle your fancy. At the end of the day, my goal is to chronicle Cruise's successes and failures, both within his professional and private life, for those who are also interested.

In 1979, Scott Spencer published his book Endless Love , a novel about 17-year-old David Axelrod and his dangerous obsession with his girlfriend, Jade. Two years later, a film adaptation of the same name came out and disastrously missed the point of its source material. While this is no strange feat in Hollywood, it's difficult to point fingers on who, exactly, is to blame for claiming that David really was in love Jade and vice versa when the novel goes so far to explain that this isn't the case, as there doesn't seem to be much information widely available regarding the production of the film. Part of me feels that it's more likely the fault of studio meddling; after all, the popular love ballad of the same name gained this film its only Academy Award and Golden Globe. Top Gun (1986)

I was concerned about rewatching Top Gun because, in truth, I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said about it. After all, Top Gun is the most quintessentially 80s movie to exist. It has it all: mindless action, blatant US military propaganda, forced romantic subplots, cheesy synths, Berlin and Kenny Loggins, homoerotic subtext, and, of course, Tom Cruise. Of course, there's something interesting to be said when the film is put into the context of the 80s and of Cruise's life and career.

Magnolia (1999)

  This is where I would normally say this is Part 21 of my Tom Cruise rewind series, but COVID sort of ruined everything and I haven't updated it in two years because of how often the release date for Top Gun: Maverick was pushed back. This was the film that was next on that list, so it deserves something from me, I feel, even if my heart is not quite in it the way it once was. Just like I said for Eyes Wide Shu t, Magnolia required me to really mentally prepare myself to rewatch. The film itself is not why I delayed rewatching it for two years -- genuinely, I had a lot of stuff going on in the meantime, such as my 70 hour work weeks last summer -- but it is also true for me to say that this is a film I did have to be in the right mood to watch. And finally I was in the right mood, had the time to do it, AND wanted to actually see it -- so it worked out for me finally.
