Brief Update

Long time, no see.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the release for Top Gun: Maverick has been pushed back by six months. While I was disappointed by this, I was also relieved, because my personal life has become extremely busy. When I reworked my movie watching schedule, I found that I was now ahead by a number of months.

So, after a three month hiatus, I'm happy to say that I am back. This project is not over yet. We still have 22 years left to cover.

Taps (1981)

The key to understanding Taps lies in its name. It differs from the title of the novel that serves as its source material, and perhaps for good reason: while both follow the general premise of a group of military cadets fighting to keep their school open, Devery Freeman's  Father Sky serves as more of a psychological investigation behind the cadets' reasoning and their parents' opposition, while Taps purely focuses on the cadets. This may be a result of the fact that the film rights were purchased before Father Sky was published. However, nitpicking over similarities and differences doesn't mean too much when Taps provides a subdued analysis of its own on military culture within the United States.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

If I'm being honest, it's difficult for me to give an unbiased review of Interview with the Vampire as a fan of The Vampire Chronicles. The first time I saw it, I scoffed at the theatricality of it all and saw it more as a bad-but-enjoyable sort of movie; with each rewatch, however, there's something delightfully new that I discover. Perhaps this is a good summary for Cruise's career at the time, especially with the choice to play Lestat de Lioncourt, a bisexual vampire antagonist that seemed to be a far cry from his normal acting fare. But to start and stop there would be selling Cruise and Interview with the Vampire too short.

Days of Thunder (1990)

Days of Thunder ushered in a new decade for Tom Cruise. As his first film of the 90s, it marks both a fumbled transition from his reputation in the 80s to the more dignified image he crafted of himself in the 90s and a more dramatic transition in his personal life as his marriage to Mimi Rogers ended and his marriage to Nicole Kidman began. For better or for worse, it's the latter reason that makes this film more interesting than anything else. On its own, there's hardly anything memorable.
